Rebel Records: 35 Years of the Best in Bluegrass, 1960–1995 (Rebel 4000) is a four-CD anthology of 105 tracks drawn from the label’s own releases, recorded between 1962 and 1995. Rebel described it as a history of the label, from its start under Dick Freeland in Mount Rainier, Maryland, to the mid-1990s, and as a sampler of most of the acts it had recorded. The set came with a 36-page booklet, the last major work of the broadcaster and writer Bill Vernon, who died in November 1996 while working on it. It includes a list of every Rebel LP and single issued to that time, and the IBMA named it the Liner Notes of the Year in 1998.

The first disc opens with Earl Taylor & the Stoney Mountain Boys’ “The Children Are Crying,” cut in 1962 at Capitol Transcriptions in Washington, D.C. From there the set moves through early Rebel artists such as Buzz Busby, Jim Eanes, Red Allen and Frank Wakefield, and Don Reno with Bill Harrell and Eddie Adcock. It continues with the Country Gentlemen, Bill Emerson and Cliff Waldron, Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys, and the Seldom Scene. Later come Del McCoury & the Dixie Pals, Tony Rice and Larry Sparks, and finally 1990s acts such as IIIrd Tyme Out, the Lonesome River Band, Ronnie Bowman and Blue Highway. Ricky Skaggs appears on three tracks of his own and on “Don’t Cheat in Our Hometown” with Keith Whitley. On his “Drifting Too Far from the Shore,” recorded in September 1974 at Track Recorders in Silver Spring, Maryland, Skaggs plays mandolin and sings with John Starling on guitar.
