Father and Son

Bill Monroe and James Monroe

Album · 1973 · MCA MCA 310

Father and Son documents a collaboration between Bill Monroe and his son James Monroe, released on Decca in 1973. The album offered audiences a glimpse of musical continuity within the Monroe family — James, who had performed with his father's band and developed his own career as a singer, joins the patriarch on a program of material suited to dual-generation presentation. Bill Monroe was by this point a fully canonized figure in American music, his status as the Father of Bluegrass established in both the popular and critical imagination. James's voice shares qualities with his father's without reproducing it exactly, and the dynamic between the two performers has genuine musical interest beyond its genealogical dimension. The album is a warm and accessible document of Monroe in the early 1970s.
